Hello and welcome! It is time once again for another episode of The Documentary Blog podcast. This week we’re lucky enough to be joined by the only filmmaker who has won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival twice, director Ondi Timoner. She joins us to discuss her latest film, Cool It, which premiered at this years Toronto International Film Festival (you can read my thoughts on Cool It here). We also talk a bit about her previous work, specifically her last film We Live in Public. On top of that, we talk about what we’ve been watching and we introduce a brand new segment to the show titled ‘How Was Your Weekend?’. All in all a great time and a definite must listen! Be sure to check the show notes after the jump for all of the info you need about Ondi’s films and please subscribe to The Documentary Blog Podcast iTunes feed. Enjoy!

Great interview. The James Franco casting story was insane! Loved Dig! Can’t wait to see We Live In Public based on this show.
Hey guys, I’ve really been enjoying the podcast, but had a few suggestions.
There’s a lot of time spent on the podcast with the two of you guys talking and your guest not saying very much. This is totally fine, but I think if you just record the podcast in a couple sessions, this could get worked out a lot better. I almost felt sorry for Ondi that she sat on the line for so long without a chance to say anything while the coverage of a festival was being discussed. The thing is that I would like to hear these festivals talked about, but I think you can always do so after you’re done with the interview. So if I were in your place, I would ask the guest for their recommendation, how their weekend is going, etc. and then go straight to the interview. You can then record how your weekends went, your recommendations, and anything else you want to talk about, and edit the two together. Not quite as easy as doing it all in one shot, but I think it would maximizes your guest’s time, as well as your own, since as you don’t have any constraints over how long you guys can discuss a certain film, festival, etc.
Anyway, there’s my unsolicited two cents.
And any chance of getting someone involved with “Catfish” on the show? What about “Exit Through the Gift Shop”?
Keep up the good work.
Hey Brian,
Thanks for the recommendation. It should be noted that we recorded our conversation with Ondi in one chunk and then edited in our own discussions after the fact, so Ondi was not actually waiting on the line while we were talking about the Flyway Film Festival. Due to time constraints or schedules it’s not always possible to have our guests sit in for the entire show so we occasionally record our own segments on our own time.
Thanks for the thoughts and keep listening!
Ha, now I feel like an idiot. I wanted to think that as documentary filmmakers you guys would be cognizant of your guest’s time, and turns out that’s the case.
Anyway, any luck with getting the “Catfish” guys on the show? I saw the film at a screening in LA, and afterward they were all there and made for great guests. In fact, Nev said the biggest regret he had was getting a tramp stamp tattoo.
Brian,
Don’t worry about it. I guess my editing is just too smooth for my own good. Thanks for the criticism. You are absolutely right and Jay’s reply was accurate.
I’m definitely working on getting someone from both Catfish and Exit Through the Gift Shop on the show. Both are tricky in their own way. Lots of great episodes on the way, though. Thanks for listening! Glad you’re enjoying it!
Hey. I randomly noticed that this episode is a minute or two shorter than it was when you first posted it. My iTunes just re-downloaded it like a new episode. So I’m wondering what was redacted…?
If were putting names on the future guest wish list I would have to add Joshua Zeman and Barbara Brancaccio directors of Cropsey.
You’re in luck, Film Ape. We’ve already interviewed Joshua Zeman about Cropsey. We’re holding to post that one until the DVD release of the film (February, I think) to help get the release a bit more buzz.
Great news, can’t wait to hear the interview. You guys are doing a fantastic job. Keep up the good work.
