Herschell Gordon Lewis: The Godfather of Gore Trailer

Confession time. I’ve never seen a Herschell Gordon Lewis film. He’s just one of those filmmakers who has managed to elude me for all of these years and I’ve just never caught up with any of his work. Luckily, that’s about to change! Herschell Gordon Lewis: The Godfather of Gore, a feature documentary profiling the career of the legendary filmmaker, will be making its world premiere at Montreal’s Fantasia Film Festival. While my ignorance with respect to the work of Lewis might threaten my status as a card-carrying horror fan, I’m happy to say I’m quite familiar with Frank Henenlotter, the director of this documentary. For years I’d dreamed of owning a copy of his classic film Frankenhooker on VHS. Anyone familiar with the film will know that the slipcase for the video cassette featured its own built-in voice box. With the touch of a button, Frankenhooker herself could be heard asking, ‘Want a date?’. CLASSIC. Here’s hoping Henenlotter’s involvement in this film might elevate it beyond the usual fan-service sort of filmmaking that I’ve come to expect from these types of documentaries. Here’s the synopsis:

Take an outrageous ride through this wild world of exploitation films with this thoroughly entertaining documentary, HERSCHELL GORDON LEWIS – THE GODFATHER OF GORE!
